Abyssalis

Under more than six hundred meters deep in the ocean, there is the nocturnal abyssal zone: a dark, strange and dangerous world never reached by the sunlight. In this unknown and ghostly realm, the living beings and organisms have developed peculiar and sophisticated survival systems as movement sensors or bioluminescent bodies that emit their own light.

My interest in marine biology is one of the main motivations for this project. Imagination and photographic techniques play a fundamental role in recreating such a secret world between science and fantasy, which is very difficult to discover otherwise due to its inaccessible conditions for the human being.

Series Abyssalis 2005. Pemios Lux ’05 awarded.
